Descemet Membrane Peeling

Descemet membrane peeling is an ophthalmic microsurgical technique that removes the cornea’s Descemet membrane, often together with dysfunctional endothelial cells, to restore corneal clarity or prepare the eye for endothelial transplantation. During surgery, the membrane is carefully separated from the posterior corneal stroma and peeled with specialized instruments, allowing healthy host or donor endothelial cells to repopulate the exposed surface and regulate corneal hydration. The technique is used in procedures such as Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty and Descemet stripping only for selected endothelial disorders, including Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy. Its outcomes can include improved vision, reduced corneal swelling, and targeted treatment with limited tissue disruption.
