Invasive Area Quantification

Invasive area quantification is the measurement of tissue occupied by disease that extends into or beyond a surrounding anatomical boundary, most commonly tumor invasion in medical pathology. It typically involves staining tissue sections, identifying the invasive region, and calculating its area from calibrated microscope images through manual tracing or image-based segmentation. In cancer research, this approach helps characterize local invasion, compare disease severity, and evaluate how treatments affect tumor spread. Standardized measurements can support histopathological assessment, improve reproducibility across studies, and provide quantitative data for correlating tissue changes with clinical outcomes.

Amikacin Protection Assay for Quantification and Visualization of Escherichia coli Cell Invasion

2026

Antibiotic resistance amongst adherent-invasive Escherichia coli strains poses challenges for assessing bacterial invasion using the traditional gentamicin protection assay. An improved method to evaluate bacterial invasion quantitatively by enumerating colony-forming units and qualitatively through visualization of infected cells by immunofluorescence confocal microscopy is described.

This article provides detailed methodologies for the use of three-dimensional (3D) assays to quantify breast cancer cell invasion. Specifically, we discuss the procedures required to set up such assays, quantification, and data analysis, as well as methods to examine the loss of membrane integrity that occurs when cells invade.

This protocol demonstrates how to generate fluorescently marked, genetically defined clonal tumors in the Drosophila eye/antennal imaginal discs (EAD). It describes how to dissect the EAD and brain from the third instar larvae and how to process them to visualize and quantify gene expression changes and tumor invasiveness.

Non-invasive Skeletal Muscle Quantification in Small Animals Using Micro-computed Tomography

This protocol uses micro-computed tomography to enable the cost-effective quantification of lean mass, including skeletal muscle and visceral tissue, adipose tissue, and skeletal tissue in small animals. It distinguishes between lean and adipose tissue, which offers significant advantages for biomedical research, particularly in translational research in small animals.
