Murine Muscle Training

Murine muscle training is the controlled use of exercise protocols to study skeletal muscle adaptation, performance, and disease in mice, providing an experimental bridge between basic biology and medicine. Training typically applies repeated contractile activity, such as voluntary or externally imposed exercise, under defined duration, intensity, and progression; mechanical and metabolic signals then regulate muscle fiber function, energy use, vascular responses, and tissue remodeling. Researchers use these models to examine muscle wasting, injury recovery, aging, obesity, and neuromuscular disorders, while evaluating potential therapies and rehabilitation strategies. Because training conditions can be standardized and measured, murine studies help link cellular mechanisms with functional outcomes relevant to human health.

2012

A murine model of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), a safe and inexpensive clinical modality, to the anterior compartment muscles is described. This model has the advantage of modifying a readily available clinical device for the purpose of eliciting targeted and specific muscle contractions in mice.

The purpose of this protocol is to demonstrate the isolation and culture techniques of murine primary vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from the coronary circulation. Once VSMCs have been isolated, they can be used for many standard culture techniques.

Inspiratory Muscle Training as an Adjunct to the Treatment of Weaning Failure in Critically Ill Patients: A Practical Guide

Respiratory muscle weakness is highly prevalent in patients weaning from mechanical ventilation. Resistive inspiratory muscle training (IMT) can improve inspiratory strength and potentially weaning outcomes. This protocol provides a structured approach to offer IMT to selected patients based on the best available knowledge, facilitating its wider application in critical care.

Hindlimb Skeletal Muscle Extraction: A Procedure to Excise Hindlimb Skeletal Muscles from Murine Model

In this video, we describe the procedure to excise hindlimb skeletal muscles from a mouse model. The excised muscles can be stored at lower temperatures until further downstream...

Improving Strength, Power, Muscle Aerobic Capacity, and Glucose Tolerance through Short-term Progressive Strength Training Among Elderly People

2017

The effect of short-term resistance training on elderly people was investigated through the simultaneous use of several methods. Compared to a control group, many improvements were seen, including on muscle aerobic capacity, glucose tolerance, strength, power, and muscle quality (i.e., protein involved in cell signaling and muscle fiber type composition).
