Murine Orthodontic Model

The murine orthodontic model is an in vivo research system that uses mice to investigate tooth movement, periodontal tissue responses, and bone remodeling, providing a controlled platform for studying orthodontic biology. A calibrated mechanical force applied to a tooth creates compression and tension within the periodontal ligament, triggering coordinated inflammatory signaling, osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, and osteoblast-associated bone formation. Researchers use this model to examine the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying orthodontic tooth movement, evaluate genetic or pharmacological influences, and assess strategies for improving treatment outcomes. Its small size, defined genetics, and experimental flexibility support mechanistic studies relevant to oral medicine and craniofacial research.
