Osteotomy Guide

An osteotomy is a surgical procedure in which bone is cut and repositioned to correct alignment, redistribute mechanical load, or improve joint function. During the procedure, the surgeon plans the location and angle of the bone cut, removes or adds a wedge when needed, and stabilizes the repositioned segments with plates, screws, or other fixation devices while healing occurs. Osteotomy guides support accurate planning and execution by helping transfer a predetermined correction to the bone. In medicine, these procedures are used to treat deformities, malalignment, arthritis-related problems, and selected injuries, with the goal of improving movement, reducing pain, and preserving or restoring function.

One constraint of preclinical research in the field of bone repair is the lack of experimental control over the local mechanical environment within a healing bone lesion. We report the design and use of an external fixator for bone repair with the ability to change fixator stiffness in vivo.

Protocol for Developing a Femur Osteotomy Model in Wistar Albino Rats

2022

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.

Stabilizing a Femur Osteotomy with a Plate Fixation in Ambystoma mexicanum
