Sensory Organization Test

The Sensory Organization Test is a clinical assessment of postural control that examines how the brain uses sensory information to maintain balance. During the test, visual cues and the support surface are systematically altered, challenging the integration of visual, vestibular, and somatosensory inputs while postural sway is measured. In medicine, this evaluation helps identify sensory contributions to dizziness, imbalance, and vestibular dysfunction, including whether a patient relies excessively on vision or surface feedback. Results can support diagnosis, guide balance rehabilitation, and monitor changes in patients with neurological or vestibular disorders.

Sensory Perception: Organization of the Somatosensory System

2024

The somatosensory system is the central and peripheral nervous system component that senses and processes touch, pressure, pain, temperature, and body position or proprioception. The process of sensation takes place at three levels: The receptor level: The receptor level is the first stage of sensation. It involves the detection of a stimulus by specialized sensory receptors. The stimulus must arrive within the receptor's receptive field. Next, the receptor converts the energy of the stimulus...

What is a Sensory System?

2019

Sensory systems detect stimuli—such as light and sound waves—and transduce them into neural signals that can be interpreted by the nervous system. In addition to external stimuli detected by the senses, some sensory systems detect internal stimuli—such as the proprioceptors in muscles and tendons that send feedback about limb position. Sensory systems include the visual, auditory, gustatory (taste), olfactory (smell), somatosensory (touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception), and vestibular...

Source:Tracey A. Milligan, MD; Tamara B. Kaplan, MD; Neurology, Brigham and Women's/Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA A complete sensory examination consists of testing primary sensory modalities as well as cortical sensory function. Primary sensory modalities include pain, temperature, light touch, vibration, and joint position sense. Sensation of the face is discussed in the videos Cranial Nerves Exam I and II, as are the special senses of smell, vision, taste, and...
