Temporary Occlusion

Temporary occlusion is the deliberate, reversible blockage of a blood vessel, duct, or other anatomical passage to limit movement through it for a defined period. In medicine, clinicians create occlusion using devices such as balloon catheters, vascular clamps, or tourniquets, which reduce or stop flow until the device is released or removed. This controlled interruption can provide a clearer operative field, help manage bleeding, or support minimally invasive procedures by isolating a target area. Because prolonged blockage may impair tissue perfusion, duration and pressure require careful monitoring. Temporary occlusion therefore supports surgical control while preserving the option to restore normal flow.

Here, we present protocols for the synthesis of disaccharide nucleosides by the regioselective O-glycosylation of ribonucleosides via a temporary protection of their 2',3'-diol moieties utilizing a cyclic boronic ester. This method applies to several unprotected nucleosides such as adenosine, guanosine, cytidine, uridine, 5-methyluridine, and 5-fluorouridine to give corresponding disaccharide nucleosides.

Developing an Experimental Aneurysm Model in a Rabbit Using an Elastase-Treated Vessel Pouch

Source: Wanderer, S., et al. Arterial Pouch Microsurgical Bifurcation Aneurysm Model in the Rabbit. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the creation of an experimental aneurysm model in a rabbit using an elastase-treated vessel pouch. After excising a segment of the right CCA, the pouch is treated with elastase, then sutured to the left CCA to restore blood flow. The resulting stress on the weakened pouch walls induces aneurysm formation.
