Automated Behavioral Testing

Automated behavioral testing is a method for measuring and analyzing animal or human behavior with computer-controlled equipment, standardized tasks, and software-based scoring. In neuroscience, cameras, sensors, operant chambers, or tracking systems capture variables such as movement, reaction time, exploration, learning, and social interactions, while algorithms convert recorded behavior into quantitative measures. Automation improves consistency, reduces observer bias, and enables high-throughput comparisons across experimental groups, including studies of brain function, neurological disease, drug effects, and gene or circuit manipulation. These data support reproducible behavioral phenotyping and help link changes in behavior to neural mechanisms.

Disease, head injury, genetic modifications, and treatment of mice with drugs can have profound effects on behavior. Utilizing well-characterized and validated approaches such as marble burying and nestlet shredding, compulsive-like behaviors can be documented accurately in mice as models of human obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

An Automated System for Sound Localization Testing in Hearing-Impaired Listeners
