Cns Region Dissection

CNS region dissection is a neuroanatomical method for isolating and examining defined areas of the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, to relate structure to function. The procedure uses anatomical landmarks and carefully controlled tissue separation to preserve region-specific architecture, pathways, and cellular organization for downstream analysis. In neuroscience, dissected regions support microscopy, electrophysiology, molecular assays, and tissue characterization, helping researchers investigate neural circuits, development, injury, and disease. By producing anatomically defined samples, this approach improves the interpretation of regional gene expression, connectivity, and physiological responses in both experimental models and comparative studies.

Different cerebellar regions have been implicated to play a role in distinct behavioral outputs, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unknown. This work describes a method to reproducibly and quickly dissect cerebellar cortex of the hemispheres, anterior and posterior regions of the vermis, and the deep cerebellar nuclei in order to probe for molecular differences by isolating RNA and testing for differences in gene...

The rodent retina has long been recognized as an accessible window to the brain. In this technical paper we provide a protocol that employs the mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy to study the mechanisms that lead to failure of vascular regeneration within the central nervous system after ischemic injury. The described system can also be harnessed to explore strategies to promote regrowth of functional blood vessels within the retina and CNS.

Micro-dissection of rat brain into various regions is extremely important for the study of different neurodegenerative diseases. This video demonstrates micro-dissection of four major brain regions include olfactory bulb, frontal cortex, striatum and hippocampus in fresh rat brain tissue. Useful tips for quick removal of respective regions to avoid RNA and protein degradation of the tissue are given.
