Formic Acid Pretreatment

Formic acid pretreatment is a chemical process used to condition lignocellulosic biomass before enzymatic conversion or fermentation. It uses formic acid to penetrate plant cell walls, disrupt lignin-carbohydrate associations, and hydrolyze part of the hemicellulose fraction, thereby exposing cellulose and improving its accessibility. Acid concentration, temperature, and residence time influence fractionation efficiency, sugar recovery, and the formation of inhibitory byproducts. By reducing structural recalcitrance, this approach can support the production of fermentable sugars, biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials from renewable feedstocks.

2026

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.

Acid Strength and Molecular Structure

Binary Acids and Bases In the absence of any leveling effect, the acid strength of binary compounds of hydrogen with nonmetals (A) increases as the H-A bond strength decreases down a group in the periodic table. For group 17, the order of increasing acidity is HF < HCl < HBr < HI. Likewise, for group 16, the order of increasing acid strength is H2O < H2S < H2Se < H2Te. Across a row in the periodic table, the acid strength of binary hydrogen compounds increases with increasing...

Cited by 53 •

2020

Ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX) is a thermochemical pretreatment technology that can convert lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., corn stover, rice straw, and sugarcane bagasse) into a highly digestible feedstock for both biofuels and animal feed applications. Here, we describe a laboratory-scale method for conducting AFEX pretreatment on lignocellulosic biomass.
