Hippocampal Dissection Tool

The Hippocampal Dissection Tool is a specialized instrument used to isolate the hippocampus from surrounding brain tissue for neuroscience research. It supports controlled cutting and separation of delicate neural structures, typically under magnification, helping researchers preserve hippocampal anatomy while minimizing mechanical damage. By improving the consistency and precision of tissue preparation, the tool facilitates downstream procedures such as acute slice preparation, cell and molecular analysis, electrophysiology, and culture. Reliable hippocampal dissection is essential for investigating learning and memory, synaptic plasticity, neurodegenerative disease, and neural development, while standardized handling can improve reproducibility across experiments.

We describe a method to prepare organotypic hippocampal slices that can be easily adapted to other brain regions. Brain slices are laid on porous membranes and culture media is allowed to form an interface. This method preserves the gross architecture of the hippocampus for up to 2 weeks in culture.

Co-culturing of Ventral Hippocampal and Nucleus Accumbens

2025

This video demonstrates the process of preparing ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues from mouse brains for co-culture. Neurons extend projections to form synaptic connections between the ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues. This method allows studying neuronal interactions between these two brain regions, offering insights into cognition, behavior, and neurological disorders.

Astrocytes are one of the most important key players in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we are reporting a practical method of sexed hippocampal astrocyte culture protocol in order to study the mechanisms underlying the astrocyte function in male and female neonate pups after in-vitro ischemia.
