Impedance Spectroscopy Analysis

Impedance spectroscopy analysis is a technique that characterizes materials and biological systems by measuring their electrical impedance across a range of frequencies. A small alternating electrical signal is applied, and the resulting voltage or current response is analyzed as frequency-dependent resistance and reactance, often using equivalent-circuit models to distinguish conductive and capacitive components. In neuroscience, this approach helps assess neural tissue properties, cell membranes, and electrode-tissue interfaces, where ionic conduction and membrane capacitance shape signal transmission. It supports the development and evaluation of neural recording and stimulation devices, while providing non-destructive measurements relevant to brain research, bioelectronic engineering, and neurological disease studies.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...

The electrode-tissue interface of neural recording electrodes can be characterized with electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Application of voltage biasing changes the electrochemical properties of the electrode-tissue interface and can improve recording capability. Voltage biasing, EIS, CV, and neural recordings are complementary.

In chemistry it is used to identify molecules by their Raman fingerprint. In solid-state physics it is used to characterize materials, and more specifically to investigate their crystal structure or crystallinity. Compared to other techniques for investigating the crystal structure (e.g. transmission electron...
