Marmoset Brain

The marmoset brain is the central nervous system organ of a small New World primate and an important model for studying how primate neural circuits support behavior. Its cerebral cortex, subcortical structures, and connections process sensory information through electrical activity and synaptic communication, coordinating perception, movement, learning, and social responses. In neuroscience, researchers use behavioral testing, neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and molecular methods to link brain structure with circuit function. This work clarifies primate brain organization and supports investigation of neurological and psychiatric disorders, while the marmoset’s compact size and complex social behavior enable complementary studies of brain function.

Serial Two-Photon Tomography of the Whole Marmoset Brain for Neuroanatomical Analyses

2025

Serial two-photon tomography (STPT) imaging is a technique to image a mass of tissue in its three-dimensional shape by combining two-photon imaging with automatic stage control and microtome slicing. Here we describe a protocol for implementing it for marmoset brains to better understand their structural features.

We have developed a whole-cortical electrocorticographic array for the common marmoset that continuously covers almost the entire lateral surface of cortex, from the occipital pole to the temporal and frontal poles. This protocol describes a chronic implantation procedure of the array in the epidural space of the marmoset brain.

Here, we describe a hand-rearing method for raising infant marmosets in an animal incubator. This method greatly increases the survival rate of marmoset infants, which provides the opportunity to study the development of marmoset infants with similar genetic backgrounds raised in different postnatal environments.

Electroencephalography Measurements in Awake Marmosets Listening to Conspecific Vocalizations

To study the evolution of language, comparing brain mechanisms in humans with those in nonhuman primates is important. We developed a method to noninvasively measure the electroencephalography (EEG) of awake animals. It allows us to directly compare EEG data between humans and animals for the long term without harming them.
