Nerve Response Testing

Nerve response testing is a group of clinical and research methods used to assess how nerves detect stimuli, transmit signals, and produce sensory or motor responses. Depending on the method, testing may involve applying a controlled stimulus and measuring reflexes, muscle activity, sensation, or electrical signals as they travel along a nerve. In neuroscience, these measurements help identify changes in nerve conduction, localize dysfunction, and evaluate responses to injury, disease, or treatment. Standardized testing also supports studies of neural pathways and recovery, providing functional evidence that complements anatomical imaging and cellular analyses.

Due to the simplicity of surgery and the robust behavioural outcome, chronic constriction of the sciatic nerve is one of the pre-eminent animal models of neuropathic pain. Within 24 hrs following surgery, pain hypersensitivity is established and can be quantitatively measured using a von Frey aesthesiometer (mechanical test) and plantar analgesia meter (thermal test).

In Vivo Electrophysiological Measurement of the Rat Ulnar Nerve with Axonal Excitability Testing

Axonal excitability techniques provide a powerful tool to examine pathophysiology and biophysical changes that precede irreversible degenerative events. This manuscript demonstrates the use of these techniques on the ulnar nerve of anesthetized rats.

Testing Sensory Nerve Function in a Surgically Denervated Mouse Model

This video demonstrates testing sensory nerve function in a mouse model by surgically denervating one side and leaving the other as a control. The response to mechanical stimulation confirms the role of sensory nerves.

In Vivo Biomechanical Testing of Nerve: A Procedure for Biomechanical Analysis of Brachial Plexus Nerve Injury in a Neonatal Pig Model

In this video, we demonstrate the biomechanical testing of the brachial plexus nerve in a pig model to measure the threshold tensile strength of the nerve when subjected to stretching. This technique helps in determining the structural and mechanical properties of the nerve.

Facial Nerve Axotomy in Mice: A Model to Study Motoneuron Response to Injury
