Neural Cell Communication

Neural cell communication is the process by which neurons and other nervous system cells exchange information, enabling sensation, movement, cognition, and coordinated physiological responses. Within a neuron, ion movements across the cell membrane generate electrical signals called action potentials; at synapses, these signals trigger neurotransmitter release, which binds receptors on neighboring cells and alters their electrical activity. Communication can also involve direct electrical coupling or chemical signals between neurons and glial cells. Studying these mechanisms helps explain neural circuits, learning and memory, sensory processing, and neurological disorders, while supporting research into drugs, brain-computer interfaces, and therapies that modify dysfunctional signaling.

We describe here how to perform a single-cell microinjection of Lucifer Yellow to visualize cellular communication via gap-junctions in living cells, and provide some useful tips. We expect that this paper will help everyone to evaluate the degree of cellular coupling due to functional gap junctions. Everything described here could be, in principle, adapted to other fluorescent dyes with molecular weight below 1,000 Daltons.

Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction. Types of Communication A common form of communication is visual. Visual communication can be...

Here is a protocol to grow pluripotent stem cells (PSC) and neural stem cells (NSC) in an enclosed cell culture system that permits maximum sterility and reproducibility, replacing the traditional biosafety cabinet and incubator. This equipment meets clinical good manufacturing practice (cGMP) and clinical good lab practice (cGLP) guidelines.
