Beta-2 Receptors

Beta-2 receptors are G protein-coupled adrenergic receptors that mediate many physiological responses to epinephrine and related signaling molecules, making them important targets in pharmacology. When activated, they couple primarily to stimulatory G proteins, which increase adenylyl cyclase activity, intracellular cyclic AMP, and protein kinase A signaling. This pathway relaxes smooth muscle in the airways, blood vessels, and uterus, while also influencing metabolic processes. Beta-2 agonists such as bronchodilators exploit these effects to improve airflow in conditions including asthma, although receptor selectivity is incomplete and treatment can cause effects such as tremor or increased heart rate.

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

Over the recent years, live cell-based assays have been used successfully to detect antibodies against surface and conformational antigens. Here, we describe a method using high-throughput flow cytometry enabling the analysis of large cohorts of patients. Detection of novel antibodies will improve diagnosis and treatment of immune-mediated disorders.

Cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity (CML) assays can be used to test autoreactive responses and study mechanisms of cell death in vitro. However, using live-cell confocal microscopic imaging techniques with fluorescent dyes, the type and kinetics of cell death as well as the pathways utilized can be studied in greater detail.
