Database Peak Identification

Database peak identification is the process of locating and characterizing local maxima in stored scientific measurements, where peaks may represent resonances, spectral lines, diffraction features, or other concentrated signals. It typically compares each data point with neighboring values, applies noise reduction or baseline correction, and evaluates criteria such as peak height, prominence, width, and position to distinguish meaningful features from fluctuations. In physics, this analysis helps organize large experimental datasets, match detected features across measurements, and extract parameters for modeling. Reliable identification supports spectroscopy, detector characterization, materials analysis, and automated comparison of observations with reference databases.

Database Searching

2026

Effective research begins with the ability to navigate academic databases efficiently. Unlike general web search engines, scholarly databases are designed to index peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and other credible academic publications. Developing a structured search strategy ensures that researchers can identify relevant, high-quality sources with precision. For example, when studying how sleep patterns relate to circadian rhythms in humans, researchers should move beyond...

2013

Pyrosequencing is a versatile technique that facilitates microbial genome sequencing that can be used to identify bacterial species, discriminate bacterial strains, and detect genetic mutations that confer resistance to anti-microbial agents. In this video, the procedure for microbial amplicon generation, amplicon pyrosequencing, and DNA sequence analysis will be demonstrated.

IR Spectrum Peak Intensity: Dipole Moment

2024

The dipole moment of a bond is the product of the partial charge on either atom and the distance between them. Dipole moments influence the efficiency of IR absorption and the peak intensity. When a bond with a dipole moment is placed in an electric field, the direction of the field determines if the bond is compressed or stretched. Electromagnetic radiation consists of an electric field component that rapidly reverses direction. It follows that polar bonds are alternately stretched and...
