Thermal Barrier Coating

Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is a heat-resistant surface system that protects underlying materials from high temperatures, extending component life in demanding environments. Typically, a porous ceramic topcoat is applied over a metallic bond coat; the ceramic’s low thermal conductivity reduces heat flow, while its thermal expansion behavior and microstructure help accommodate thermal cycling and limit heat transfer to the substrate. In physics and engineering, TBCs support higher operating temperatures and improved efficiency in gas turbines, aircraft engines, and other energy systems, while providing a practical context for studying heat conduction, thermal stress, oxidation, and materials degradation.

High-resolution Thermal Micro-imaging Using Europium Chelate Luminescent Coatings

2017

Europium thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (EuTFC) has an optical luminescence line at 612 nm, whose activation efficiency decreases strongly with temperature. If a sample coated with a thin film of this material is micro-imaged, the 612 nm luminescent response intensity may be converted into a direct map of sample surface temperature.

The Organic Electrochemical Transistor is integrated with live cells and used to monitor ion flux across the gastrointestinal epithelial barrier. In this study, an increase in ion flux, related to disruption of tight junctions, induced by the presence of the calcium chelator EGTA (ethylene glycol-bis(beta-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetra acetic acid), is measured.
