Fusiform Face Area

The fusiform face area (FFA) is a region of the ventral temporal cortex that responds more strongly to faces than to many other visual categories, making it central to psychological research on visual perception and recognition. Visual input travels through the ventral stream, where neural populations in the fusiform gyrus analyze the arrangement of facial features and support the identification of individual faces. Researchers study the FFA using functional magnetic resonance imaging, neuropsychological assessments, and related methods to investigate attention, expertise, and perceptual development. This work informs theories of face processing and conditions such as prosopagnosia, which involves impaired face recognition.

2023

Behavioral neuroscience is the study of how the nervous system guides behavior, and how the various functional areas and networks within the brain correlate to specific behaviors and disease states. Researchers in this field utilize a wide variety of experimental methods ranging from complex animal training techniques to sophisticated imaging experiments in human subjects. This video first offers a historical overview of some of the major milestones that lead to our current understanding of the...

Visual Attention: fMRI Investigation of Object-based Attentional Control

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel— University of Southern California The human visual system is incredibly sophisticated and capable of processing large amounts of information very quickly. However, the brain's capacity to process information is not an unlimited resource. Attention, the ability to selectively process information that is relevant to current goals and to ignore information that is not, is therefore an essential part of visual perception. Some aspects of...

The integration of conductive nanoparticles, such as graphene nanoplatelets, into glass fiber composite materials creates an intrinsic electrical network susceptible to strain. Here, different methods to obtain strain sensors based on the addition of graphene nanoplatelets into the epoxy matrix or as a coating on glass fabrics are proposed.
