Memory Function Impact

Memory function impact refers to how the effectiveness of encoding, storing, and retrieving information influences cognition and behavior. In psychology, memory performance depends on processes such as attention during encoding, the organization of information in storage, and the accuracy of retrieval, with working memory supporting the temporary manipulation of information during ongoing tasks. These functions shape learning, decision-making, language use, and everyday adaptation, while disruptions can affect academic performance, emotional regulation, and independent functioning. Studying memory function impact helps researchers assess cognitive changes, understand psychological conditions, and develop strategies to support learning and rehabilitation.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Why is it relatively hard to remember everything on a shopping list if it includes more than just a handful of items? Why is it possible to remember a phone number that one just heard, but not two or three phone numbers at once? Why is it difficult to remember names when several new people are introduced at the same time? The answer has to do with the fact that over short-durations people rely on a specialized memory system...

Working memory predicts a significant amount of variance for a variety of cognitive tasks, including speaking, reading, and writing. However, few tools are available to assess working memory in children. We present an innovative, computer-based battery that comprehensively assesses different components of working memory in school-age children.

An Introduction to Learning and Memory

Learning is the process of acquiring new information and memory is the retention or storage of that information. Different types of learning, such as non-associative and associative learning, and different types of memory, such as long-term and short-term memory, have been associated with human behaviors. Studying these components in detail helps behavioral scientists understand the neural mechanisms behind these two complex phenomena. JoVE's overview on learning and memory introduces common...
