Parahippocampal Place Area

The parahippocampal place area (PPA) is a region of the ventral visual cortex that responds preferentially to images of places and scenes, making it important for understanding how the brain recognizes environmental settings. When people view a scene, the PPA processes visual information about spatial layout, geometric structure, and contextual features, helping distinguish a familiar place from other visual categories. In psychology and cognitive neuroscience, researchers use functional neuroimaging to measure PPA activity and examine its roles in scene perception, navigation, and memory, clarifying how the brain represents and uses information about the surrounding environment.

Visual Attention: fMRI Investigation of Object-based Attentional Control

2023

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel— University of Southern California The human visual system is incredibly sophisticated and capable of processing large amounts of information very quickly. However, the brain's capacity to process information is not an unlimited resource. Attention, the ability to selectively process information that is relevant to current goals and to ignore information that is not, is therefore an essential part of visual perception. Some aspects of...

Monitoring Seizure-Induced Neural Electrical Activity in Brain Slices Using Microelectrode Arrays

2025

This protocol involves using a microelectrode array (MEA) to record electrical activity in a brain slice exposed to a seizure-inducing drug. The procedure includes positioning the brain slice in an MEA recording chamber, applying electrical stimulation to induce artificial seizures, and analyzing the resulting signals.

The integration of conductive nanoparticles, such as graphene nanoplatelets, into glass fiber composite materials creates an intrinsic electrical network susceptible to strain. Here, different methods to obtain strain sensors based on the addition of graphene nanoplatelets into the epoxy matrix or as a coating on glass fabrics are proposed.
