Chi-square Table

A chi-square table is a statistical reference tool that lists critical values of the chi-square distribution for selected significance levels and degrees of freedom. To use it, researchers calculate a chi-square test statistic, determine the degrees of freedom, and locate the corresponding table value; comparing the statistic with this cutoff indicates whether to reject the null hypothesis. In statistics, chi-square tables support tests of independence between categorical variables, goodness-of-fit analyses, and tests of variance. They provide a practical way to interpret results and assess whether observed differences or associations are unlikely to have occurred by chance.

Chi-square Distribution

How does one determine if bingo numbers are evenly distributed or if some numbers occurred with a greater frequency? Or if the types of movies people preferred were different across different age groups or if a coffee machine dispensed approximately the same amount of coffee each time. These questions can be addressed by conducting a hypothesis test. One distribution that can be used to find answers to such questions is known as the chi-square distribution. The chi-square distribution has...

Chi-square Analysis

The chi-square test is a statistical hypothesis test. It is used to check whether there is a significant difference between an expected value and an observed value. In the context of genetics, it enables us to either accept or reject a hypothesis, based on how much the observed values deviate from the expected values. The chi-square test was developed by Pearson in 1990. The first step of performing a Chi-square analysis is to establish a null hypothesis, which assumes that there is no real...

Finding Critical Values for Chi-Square

Consider a curve representing sample data drawn randomly from a normally distributed population. One must construct confidence intervals to estimate or to test a claim regarding the population standard deviation. For example, a 95% confidence interval covers 95% of the area under the curve, and the remaining 5% is equally distributed on either side of the curve. To achieve such confidence intervals, one must determine the critical values. The critical values are simply the values separating the...

Flow Table Test

The flow table test is an established method used to assess the workability of concrete, particularly useful for evaluating highly flowable concrete mixes. This test employs an apparatus that consists of a wooden board topped with a steel plate, collectively weighing 35 pounds. The board is connected to a base via a hinge and measures 27.6 inches on each side. Concrete is placed within a truncated cone mold that is 8 inches high with an 8-inch base diameter and a 5-inch top diameter. The...

Life Tables

A life table is a statistical tool that summarizes the mortality and survival patterns of a population, providing detailed insights into the likelihood of survival or death across different age intervals within a cohort. By organizing data on survival probabilities and mortality rates, life tables offer a clear snapshot of population dynamics over time. They are extensively used in demography, public health, actuarial science, and ecology to analyze life expectancy, design health interventions,...
