パッチクランプ記録法はニューロンの活性化を制御するイオンチャネルを研究するための非常に有用なテクニックです。
ガラスマイクロピペットを細胞に押しあて、単一もしくは複数のチャネルをもつ細胞膜の一部を単離します。これを「パッチ」と呼びます。
さらに、そのパッチ部分を電気的環境に固定すなわち「クランプ」し細胞膜に電圧をかけ測定します。イオンチャネルの存在が膜へのイオン流入に関与し、複雑な機能をもつイオンチャネルの研究が可能となります。
