脳は体の中で最も複雑な器官といっても過言ではなく、実験をうまく進めるためにはシンプルなシステムが必要不可欠となります。細胞培養は、そんな実験系の一つであり、生きたニューロンへのアクセスを可能にします。一般に、培養液を用いて、無菌的に条件を整えたインキュベーターの中で育てていきます。初代培養とは、生物から切り出した組織の細胞を直接用いる培養法です。神経細胞の初代培養は多様な生物の様々な発生段階の神経組織を用いて行われます。
