Wistar Rat Model

The Wistar rat model is an established laboratory animal system used to study physiology, disease, and the performance of biomedical technologies under controlled conditions. Researchers monitor responses in these albino rats after applying defined interventions, such as implanting a biomaterial, administering a therapeutic compound, or inducing a disease-related condition, and compare outcomes with appropriate controls. In bioengineering, Wistar rats support preclinical evaluation of tissue-engineered constructs, drug-delivery systems, medical devices, and regenerative strategies by providing measurements of biocompatibility, inflammation, tissue integration, and functional recovery. Findings can guide device optimization and inform later studies in more clinically relevant models.

Protocol for Developing a Femur Osteotomy Model in Wistar Albino Rats

2022

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.

This protocol demonstrates our model of activity-based locomotor treadmill training for rats with spinal cord injury (SCI). Included is both quadrupedal and forelimb-only groups, in addition to two distinct types of non-trained control groups. Investigators are able to assess training effects on SCI rats using this protocol.

A Viral Vector Injection into the Rat Substantia Nigra for Neurodegenerative Disease Modeling
