Follicular Cell Separation

Follicular cell separation is a laboratory technique that isolates the somatic cells surrounding an oocyte or developing ovarian follicle from the germ cell compartment. The process typically disrupts cell-cell and extracellular-matrix contacts through controlled enzymatic treatment, mechanical dissociation, or both, followed by collection of the resulting cell fractions. In developmental biology, separated follicular cells support studies of oocyte maturation, follicle formation, cell signaling, and communication between germline and somatic tissues. By enabling each population to be analyzed independently, the method helps clarify how cellular interactions regulate reproductive development and can provide material for imaging, molecular assays, and functional experiments.

Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation

2023

Cell separation was first achieved in 1964 by S. H. Seal, who separated large tumor cells from the smaller blood cells using filtration. Two years later, Pohl and Hawk performed experiments on how cells respond differently to a nonuniform electric field based on the cell type. Such observations were the inception of cell separation methods, which allow isolating a single cell type from a heterogeneous sample. Commonly used cell separation techniques include filtration, density gradient...
