Calcium Clay Substrate

Calcium clay substrate is a clay-based environmental medium enriched with calcium, used to support soil, sediment, or other managed systems. Its fine mineral particles provide extensive surface area, while calcium ions participate in cation exchange and influence particle aggregation, water retention, and the movement of dissolved substances. These properties can affect nutrient availability, soil structure, pH buffering, and the transport of contaminants or other chemicals through the environment. Understanding calcium clay substrates helps researchers evaluate soil quality, design environmental amendments, and assess how mineral composition shapes biological activity and chemical cycling in terrestrial and aquatic systems.

The interaction and sedimentation of the clay and bacterial cells within the marine realm, observed in natural environments, can be best investigated in a controlled lab environment. Here, we describe a detailed protocol, which outlines a novel method for measuring the sedimentation rate of clay and cyanobacterial floccules.

Calcium Imaging in Neurons

2023

Calcium ions play an integral role in neuron function: They act as intracellular signals that can elicit responses such as altered gene expression and neurotransmitter release from synaptic vesicles. Within the cell, calcium concentration is highly dynamic due to the presence of pumps that selectively transport these ions in response to a variety of signals. Calcium imaging takes advantage of intracellular calcium flux to directly visualize calcium signaling in living neurons. This video begins...
