Biochip Slide

A biochip slide is a miniaturized analytical platform that arranges biological molecules or cells on a solid surface to measure many biomolecular interactions simultaneously. In immunology and infection research, immobilized antigens, antibodies, nucleic acids, or other capture probes bind matching targets in a sample; labeled detection molecules then generate signals that reveal the presence or relative abundance of immune markers or pathogen-associated molecules. Biochip slides support multiplexed analysis of host responses, infectious agents, and antigen-antibody interactions while using small sample volumes. Their high-throughput format can accelerate biomarker profiling, diagnostic development, and investigation of mechanisms underlying infection and immunity.

Design Example: Designing Water Slide

2025

When designing a water slide, controlling the speed of water flow is crucial for rider safety while maintaining an exciting experience. As water flows down the slide, gravity causes it to accelerate, with its speed at the bottom depending on the height from which it starts. The higher the slide, the more potential energy the water has at the top, which is converted into kinetic energy as it descends, increasing its speed. Bernoulli's principle determines the water's velocity along the slide.

All-solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ASSISEs) constructed from a conductive polymer (CP) transducer provide several months of functional lifetime in liquid media. Here, we describe the fabrication and calibration process of ASSISEs in a lab-on-a-chip format. The ASSISE is demonstrated to have maintained a near-Nernstian slope profile after prolonged storage in complex biological media.

The abiotic portion includes inorganic particles ranging in size and shape that determine the soil’s texture. The biotic portion incorporates plant residues, roots, organic matter, and microorganisms. Soil microbe abundance and diversity is expansive, as...
