Neonatal Cerebral Function

Neonatal cerebral function describes how a newborn’s brain supports consciousness, sensory processing, movement, autonomic control, and adaptation after birth, making it central to assessing early neurological health. During the transition from fetal to extrauterine life, changes in oxygen and glucose delivery, cerebral blood flow, sleep-wake state, and neural network maturation shape electrical activity and responsiveness; clinicians can evaluate these features through neurological examination, electroencephalography, and cerebral oxygenation monitoring. Characterizing neonatal cerebral function helps identify seizures, hypoxic-ischemic injury, and developmental vulnerability, guide intensive care, estimate outcomes, and provide researchers with measures of early brain development.

Presented is a concise battery of mouse neonatal motor tests. Using these tests, neonatal motor deficits can be demonstrated in a variety of neonatal motor disorders. By having a standardized set of tests, results from different studies can be compared, allowing for better and accurate reporting between groups.

We describe a protocol herein for isolating intact islets from neonatal mice. Pancreata were partially digested with collagenase, followed by washing and hand picking. 20 - 80 islet clusters can be obtained per pancreas from newly born mice, which are suitable for several islet studies.

We combined frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy measures of cerebral hemoglobin oxygenation with diffuse correlation spectroscopy measures of cerebral blood flow index to estimate an index of oxygen metabolism. We tested the utility of this measure as a bedside screening tool to evaluate the health and development of the newborn brain.
