Rat Model Surgery

Rat model surgery is the controlled use of surgical procedures in rats to study anatomy, physiology, disease mechanisms, and potential treatments relevant to human medicine. Under anesthesia and aseptic conditions, researchers create a defined injury, implant a device, alter an organ or vessel, or obtain tissue while monitoring vital signs and providing postoperative care. These models support investigation of neurological, cardiovascular, orthopedic, and metabolic disorders, as well as evaluation of surgical techniques, biomaterials, drugs, and regenerative therapies. Standardized procedures and ethical oversight help produce reproducible findings while minimizing pain, complications, and unnecessary animal use.

Creation of Reversible Cholestatic Rat Model

2011

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.

This protocol describes the tibial neuroma transposition model, which entails a lesion of the tibial nerve with subsequent transposition of the proximal nerve end toward a subcutaneous pretibial or lateral position. Behavioral testing of neuroma pain and plantar hyperalgesia is quantified using Von Frey monofilaments.
