Smear Test

A smear test is a diagnostic laboratory procedure in which cells, blood, or microorganisms are spread as a thin layer on a glass slide for examination, helping identify disease-related changes. The sample is typically fixed, stained with chemical dyes, and viewed under a microscope so that cell shape, arrangement, and abnormal features become visible. In medicine, smear tests support cervical cancer screening, blood-cell evaluation, and detection of infectious organisms, depending on the specimen and staining method. By providing rapid, relatively low-cost evidence, they guide further testing, diagnosis, treatment decisions, and ongoing health monitoring.

2024

Sputum studies are a critical part of diagnosing and treating numerous respiratory conditions. These studies involve obtaining sputum samples for analysis to identify pathogenic organisms and assess the presence of abnormal cells indicative of malignant conditions. This lesson will delve into three fundamental sputum studies: Gram Stain, Cytology, and Acid-fast Smear and Culture. Gram Stain The Gram Stain is an integral part of sputum studies. It involves the staining of sputum, which permits...
