Warm Ischemic Time

Warm ischemic time is the period during which tissue or an organ remains at near-physiologic temperature after blood flow stops and before effective cooling or reperfusion begins. It matters because warm, oxygen-limited conditions can rapidly compromise cellular function and tissue viability. Without oxygen and substrates, cells shift toward anaerobic metabolism, deplete ATP, accumulate metabolic acids, and develop membrane and mitochondrial injury. In transplantation and surgery, clinicians use warm ischemic time to assess procurement conditions, compare graft quality, interpret biomarkers, and estimate risks after implantation. Reducing this interval through prompt cooling or perfusion can improve preservation and help standardize research on organ outcomes.

The postnatal rat model for hypoxic-ischemic brain injury is a well-established model of human neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). In this article, we describe the model of HIE in post-natal rat pups.

A Simplified Technique for Producing an Ischemic Wound Model

We have developed a minimally invasive technique to create a rabbit ischemic ear wound model by dividing the central artery and nerve and the cranial neurovascular bundle. A subcutaneous tunnel then cuts all subcutaneous tissues. This procedure causes minimal skin disruption and can be safely used in diabetic animals.

The gradient echo memory is a protocol for storing optical quantum states of light in atomic ensembles. Quantum memory is a key element of a quantum repeater, which can extend the range of quantum key distribution. We outline the operation of the scheme when implemented in a 3-level atomic ensemble.

The rat, due to its size, availability, and rather docile behavior, has been utilized as a research model for many years. The goal of this protocol is to utilize the rat as an ischemic skin wound healing model to provide valuable insight into the pathophysiology of chronic wounds.
