Migraine Prevalence

Migraine prevalence is the proportion of a population experiencing migraine during a specified period, making it a key measure of the disorder’s population-level burden. Researchers estimate it through epidemiological studies that use structured surveys, clinical interviews, medical records, and standardized diagnostic criteria to identify migraine cases and calculate point, period, or lifetime prevalence. In neuroscience, these estimates help characterize how migraine varies across age, sex, geography, and other demographic factors. Prevalence data guide healthcare planning, reveal groups with unmet treatment needs, support research into migraine biology and risk factors, and provide a baseline for evaluating prevention strategies and public health interventions.

In statistical epidemiology and health sciences, two essential metrics—prevalence and incidence—are fundamental for understanding disease dynamics within a population. These measures enable public health officials, epidemiologists, and researchers to assess the burden of diseases, allocate resources effectively, and design impactful public health policies and interventions. Prevalence indicates the proportion of individuals in a population who have a specific disease or health condition at a...

Migraine and its transformation to chronic migraine are immense healthcare burdens in need of improved treatment options. We seek to define how neural immune signaling modulates the susceptibility to migraine, modeled in vitro using spreading depression in hippocampal slice cultures, as a means to develop novel therapeutic targets.
