Mouse Astrocytes

Mouse astrocytes are glial cells in the central nervous system that support neuronal function, maintain tissue homeostasis, and respond to changes in the brain and spinal cord. Through processes that surround synapses and blood vessels, they regulate extracellular ions, neurotransmitter levels, energy availability, and signaling between neural and vascular cells. Studying mouse astrocytes helps researchers examine neural circuit activity, synaptic plasticity, neuroinflammation, and responses to injury or disease. Primary cultures, brain slices, transgenic models, and imaging approaches reveal how astrocyte activity influences healthy nervous-system function and contributes to conditions such as epilepsy, neurodegeneration, and brain tumors.

Astrocytes are one of the most important key players in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we are reporting a practical method of sexed hippocampal astrocyte culture protocol in order to study the mechanisms underlying the astrocyte function in male and female neonate pups after in-vitro ischemia.

Direct Neuronal Reprogramming of Mouse Astrocytes into Neurons

This video showcases the direct reprogramming of astrocytes expressing transforming factors into neurons. Transformation factors trigger a cascade of molecular events facilitating astrocyte-to-neuron conversion. The process is further supported by supplying specific agents and supplements through a neuronal differentiation medium.
