Tympanic Bulla Exposure

Tympanic bulla exposure is a surgical technique that opens the tympanic bulla, a hollow bone surrounding the middle ear, to provide access to auditory structures. Typically performed under anesthesia, the procedure involves retracting overlying tissue and carefully removing part of the bony wall while preserving nearby tissues, allowing researchers to visualize or reach the tympanic membrane, ossicles, or cochlea. In neuroscience, this approach supports studies of hearing and auditory processing by enabling local drug delivery, physiological recording, tissue sampling, or experimental manipulation. It is especially valuable for linking peripheral ear function with neural activity and behavior.

2024

Assessing tympanic membrane temperature involves using a tympanic membrane thermometer (TMT). Here is a step-by-step guide: Step 1: Begin by practicing good hand hygiene to prevent the transmission of microorganisms. Step 2: Turn on the thermometer and wait until the ready sign appears on the screen to ensure accurate measurement. Step 3: Slide the probe cover in place to prevent cross-contamination. Step 4: Instruct the patient to tilt their head to the side for comfort and check for cerumen...

In the current climate of scarce resources, new technologies are emerging that allow researchers to conduct studies cheaper, faster and with more precision. Here we describe the development of a bead-based salivary antibody multiplex immunoassay to measure human exposure to multiple environmental pathogens simultaneously.

A whole-body nanoparticle aerosol inhalation exposure facility was constructed for nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) inhalation toxicology studies. This system provides nano-TiO2 aerosol test atmospheres that have: 1) a steady mass concentration; 2) a homogenous composition free of contaminants; and 3) a stable particle size distribution during aerosol generation.
