Rodent Hippocampus

The rodent hippocampus is a brain structure involved in forming and retrieving spatial and episodic-like memories, making it an important model for biochemical studies of neural function. At hippocampal synapses, neuronal activity triggers neurotransmitter release and receptor activation, which engage calcium-dependent intracellular signaling, alter protein phosphorylation, and regulate gene expression during synaptic plasticity. Biochemical analysis of rodent hippocampal tissue can therefore link molecular changes to learning, stress responses, aging, and neurodegenerative disease. Experimental methods such as pharmacological manipulation, electrophysiology, imaging, and protein or RNA analysis help identify pathways that shape memory and evaluate potential therapeutic targets.

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.

Preparation of Organotypic Slice Cultures from a Rat Pup's Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates a method for preparing organotypic hippocampal slice cultures from the brain of a rat pup. It outlines the steps involved in the dissection of the hippocampus, slicing, and culture conditions required to promote cell viability and growth in the hippocampal slices, ultimately generating organotypic slice cultures.

Preparing Rhinal Cortex-Hippocampus Slices from a Rat Pup Brain

Role of Hippocampus in Memory

2025

The hippocampus, a critical brain structure, plays an essential role in memory processing, particularly in the formation and retrieval of memory. This small, seahorse-shaped region is located within the medial temporal lobe, with one hippocampus in each brain hemisphere. Experimental studies involving lesions in the hippocampi of rats have demonstrated significant impairments in tasks such as object recognition and maze navigation, indicating the hippocampus involvement in both recognition and...
