Bell Evans Model

The Bell-Evans model is a kinetic framework that describes how an externally applied force changes the lifetime and rupture behavior of a molecular bond. It assumes that force lowers the bond’s activation barrier, causing the dissociation rate to increase exponentially with force; under a controlled loading rate, this relationship predicts the most probable rupture force. In bioengineering, the model helps interpret force spectroscopy measurements of receptor-ligand interactions, protein unfolding, and cell adhesion. By linking measured rupture forces to bond kinetics and energy landscapes, it supports quantitative comparisons of molecular stability and mechanosensitive behavior in biological systems.

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University While most organic molecules are diamagnetic, wherein all their electrons are paired up in bonds, many transition metal complexes are paramagnetic, which has ground states with unpaired electrons. Recall Hund's rule, which states that for orbitals of similar energies, electrons will fill the orbitals to maximize the number of unpaired electrons before pairing up. Transition metals have partially populated d-orbitals...

The Bell Curve

The normal probability distribution, often depicted as a symmetrical, bell-shaped curve, is fundamental in statistics and the study of natural phenomena. This pattern, famously described by mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, shows how data points are distributed around a central mean, with most values near the average and fewer observations occurring as they deviate further from it. This pattern applies to many human characteristics beyond intelligence, such as height. For example, if you...
