Gonadal Hormones

Gonadal hormones are chemical messengers produced mainly by the ovaries and testes that regulate reproductive function, sexual development, and broader physiological changes. Their production is controlled through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis: hypothalamic signals stimulate pituitary gonadotropins, which act on the gonads to regulate steroid synthesis, while the resulting hormones provide feedback to the brain and pituitary. Estrogens, progesterone, and androgens bind intracellular receptors that alter gene expression in responsive tissues. Studying gonadal hormones helps explain gamete production, menstrual and reproductive cycles, puberty, pregnancy-related changes, and sex-specific physiology, while informing research on fertility, endocrine disorders, and hormone-based therapies.

Gonadal and Placental Hormones

The gonads, namely the testes in males and the ovaries in females, are pivotal in producing gonadal hormones that orchestrate the intricate processes of sexual development and reproduction. In males, testosterone is the primary gonadal androgen. It plays a central role in the maturation of male reproductive organs — the penis and testes. Additionally, testosterone is instrumental in the development of secondary sexual characteristics — a deep voice as well as facial and pubic hair growth — and...

Types of Hormones

2019

Hormones can be classified into three main types based on their chemical structures: steroids, peptides, and amines. Their actions are mediated by the specific receptors they bind to on target cells. Steroid hormones are derived from cholesterol and are lipophilic in nature. This allows them to readily traverse the lipid-rich cell membrane to bind to their intracellular receptors in the cytoplasm or nucleus. Once bound, the cytoplasmic hormone-receptor complex translocates to the nucleus.
