Glassy Carbon Electrodes

Glassy carbon electrodes are conductive, chemically resistant carbon electrodes widely used as stable working surfaces in electrochemistry. Produced by heating a polymer precursor until it forms a dense, non-graphitizing carbon, they combine low porosity with a broad potential window and relatively low background current; polishing renews the surface and supports reproducible electron-transfer measurements. In chemistry, these electrodes are used in cyclic voltammetry, amperometric sensing, electrodeposition, and studies of redox reactions. Their resistance to many solvents and reagents makes them valuable for analyzing inorganic ions, organic molecules, and biological compounds while minimizing contamination from the electrode material itself.

A procedure for performing reductive electropolymerization of vinyl-containing compounds onto glassy carbon and fluorine doped tin-oxide coated electrodes is presented. Recommendations on electrochemical cell configurations and troubleshooting procedures are included. Although not explicitly described here, oxidative electropolymerization of pyrrole-containing compounds follows similar procedures to vinyl-based reductive electropolymerization.

Long and hollow glassy carbon microfibers were fabricated based on the pyrolysis of a natural product, human hair. The two fabrication steps of carbon microelectromechanical and carbon nanoelectromechanical systems, or C-MEMS and C-NEMS, are: (i) photolithography of a carbon-rich polymer precursor and (ii) pyrolysis of the patterned polymer precursor.

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...
