Mass Percent

Mass percent is a measure of the proportion of a component in a mixture or compound, expressed as the component’s mass divided by the total mass multiplied by 100. It is determined by identifying the mass of the solute, element, or other constituent and comparing it with the mass of the complete sample, while careful measurement and consistent units ensure a meaningful result. In chemistry, mass percent supports solution preparation, elemental composition calculations, quality control, and stoichiometric analysis, allowing researchers and students to quantify composition, compare materials, and assess whether a sample meets a specified formulation.

Determining the Mass Percent Composition in an Aqueous Solution

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Determining the composition of a solution is an important analytical and forensic technique. When solutions are made with water, they are referred to as being aqueous, or containing water. The primary component of a solution is referred to as the solvent, and the dissolved minor component is called the solute. The solute is dissolved in the solvent to make a solution. Water is the most common solvent in...

Bond Polarity, Dipole Moment, and Percent Ionic Character

Bond Polarity The absolute value of the difference in electronegativity (ΔEN) of two bonded atoms provides a rough measure of the polarity to be expected in the bond and, thus, the bond type. When the difference is very small or zero, the bond is covalent and nonpolar. When it is large, the bond is polar covalent or ionic. The absolute values of the electronegativity differences between the atoms in the bonds H–H, H–Cl, and Na–Cl are 0 (nonpolar), 0.9 (polar covalent), and 2.1 (ionic),...

100-Percent-Reserve Banking

Imagine an economy without any banks; the entire money supply is held by the public in the form of physical currency. This means that the amount of money in the economy is equal to the total value of currency held by households and firms. Now, a commercial bank is introduced, and the public is assumed to deposit all their currency into the bank. If the bank does not issue any loans and instead holds all the deposited money in reserve, it is known as a 100-percent-reserve banking system. In this...

Formula Mass and Mole Concepts of Compounds

Formula Mass of Covalent Compounds Chemical formulas represent the elemental makeup of substances. For covalent compounds, the formula represents the numbers and types of atoms composing a single molecule of the substance; therefore, the formula mass may be correctly referred to as a molecular mass. The molecular formula of chloroform (CHCl3), a covalent compound, indicates that a single molecule contains one carbon atom, one hydrogen atom, and three chlorine atoms. The average molecular mass...
