Diagnostic Utility

Diagnostic utility is the clinical value of a test or assessment in identifying disease, guiding patient management, and improving health outcomes. It depends on how accurately a test distinguishes affected from unaffected patients, often measured through sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, likelihood ratios, and the effect of disease prevalence on interpretation. In clinical practice, diagnostic utility is evaluated by determining whether test results meaningfully change pretest probability, confirm or exclude a diagnosis, or influence treatment decisions. This framework supports evidence-based test selection, reduces unnecessary procedures and costs, and helps researchers compare emerging biomarkers, imaging methods, and molecular assays with established diagnostic approaches.

Diagnostic ultrasound imaging has proven to be effective in diagnosing various respiratory diseases in human and animal subjects. We demonstrate a comprehensive ultrasound protocol utilized by Dr. Zuo's lab to analyze diaphragm kinetics specifically in mouse models. This is also a non-invasive research technique which can provide quantitative information on mouse respiratory muscle function.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...

This protocol provides instruction for negative staining virus samples which can easily be used in BSL-2, -3, or -4 laboratories. It includes the use of an innovative processing capsule, which protects the transmission electron microscopy grid and provides the user easier handling in the more turbulent environments within biocontainment.

Concept of Utility

2024

Utility Utility is the satisfaction a customer gets from using a product. It refers to the level of satisfaction a consumer experiences. Generally, the term utility carries a wide range of implications, roughly translating to "benefit," "well-being," or "happiness." Consumers derive "utility" from using products that give them satisfaction. Utility can be measured either cardinally or ordinally. Cardinal Utility When measured cardinally, some economists used monetary units, and others suggested...
