Skin Examination

Skin examination is a structured clinical assessment of the skin, hair, nails, and visible mucous membranes used to identify abnormalities and guide diagnosis. Clinicians combine patient history with inspection and palpation, evaluating lesions by morphology, color, surface, border, size, texture, distribution, and change over time; dermoscopy or other focused tests may provide additional detail when indicated. This examination helps distinguish inflammatory, infectious, allergic, neoplastic, and systemic conditions, supports early recognition of skin cancer and serious disease, and provides a baseline for monitoring treatment response. Careful documentation also improves communication and continuity across clinical settings.
