Laser Assembly

Laser assembly is the engineering process of integrating a gain medium, pump source, optical resonator, and supporting components into a functional laser system. Electrical or optical pumping excites the gain medium, while stimulated emission and feedback between aligned mirrors produce a coherent, amplified beam; precise alignment and thermal management help maintain stable operation. Engineers apply laser assembly principles when developing cutting, welding, sensing, communications, imaging, and research instruments. Careful selection and integration of optical, mechanical, and electronic elements determine a system’s output power, wavelength, beam quality, efficiency, and reliability.

The analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC) sample cell holds sample and reference buffer and during experiments and is exposed to high vacuum and rotor speeds up to 60,000 rpm. This video will demonstrate the rigorous attention to detail necessary for assembly, loading and alignment of this very important component of an AUC experiment.

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

Protein Complex Assembly

2020

Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types. Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes. Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...
