Real-time Assessment

Real-time assessment is the continuous evaluation of a system, process, or structure as it operates, allowing engineers to identify changes and support timely decisions. It combines sensors, data acquisition, signal processing, and analytical models to collect measurements, compare them with expected conditions, and detect performance changes or emerging faults. In engineering, real-time assessment supports structural health monitoring, equipment diagnostics, process control, and safety management by providing rapid feedback during operation. These capabilities can improve reliability, reduce unplanned downtime, guide maintenance, and strengthen responses to changing operating conditions.

Ovarian cancer cell invasion into the mesothelial lining of the peritoneum is a dynamic process over time. Utilizing a real time analyzer, the invasive capacity of ovarian cancer cells in a spheroid-mesothelial cell co-culture model can be quantified over prolonged time periods, providing insights into factors regulating the metastatic process.

Retraining abnormal movement patterns following injury or disease is a key component of physical rehabilitation. Recent advances in technology have permitted accurate assessment of movement during a variety of tasks, with near instantaneous quantification of results. This provides new opportunities for modification of faulty movement patterns in real time.

This video demonstrates live cell imaging for the analysis of antifungal activity in human neutrophils using fluorescent Aspergillus reporter conidia. Initially, both red and magenta fluorescence are detected within neutrophils, while red fluorescence decreases over time, indicating the degradation of conidia and confirming the antifungal activity of neutrophils.

Real-Time Assessment of Spinal Cord Microperfusion in a Porcine Model of Ischemia/Reperfusion

Spinal cord microcirculation plays a pivotal role in spinal cord injury. Most methods do not allow real-time assessment of spinal cord microcirculation, which is essential for the development of microcirculation-targeted therapies. Here, we propose a protocol using Laser-Doppler-Flow Needle probes in a large animal model of ischemia/reperfusion.
