Sulfate Solutions

Sulfate solutions are liquid mixtures containing dissolved sulfate ions (SO₄²⁻), an important chemical system in engineering, environmental processes, and materials research. They form when soluble sulfate salts dissolve in water, where sulfate participates in acid–base equilibria, interacts with dissolved metals, and can form precipitates when concentration, pH, or temperature changes. Understanding these reactions helps engineers predict solubility, manage industrial and natural waters, control mineral processing, and assess sulfate-related effects on construction materials and corrosion. Their composition and ionic behavior are therefore central to designing reliable treatment processes and evaluating material performance.

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

2024

Sulfate attack on concrete is a deterioration process characterized by a whitish discoloration beginning at the edges and corners, accompanied by cracking and spalling. This phenomenon occurs when sulfates react with the components of hardened concrete, forming compounds like calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate which occupy more space than the substances they replace, causing the concrete to expand and disrupt. Sulfates from sources like soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents...

Preparation and Characterization of SDF-1α-Chitosan-Dextran Sulfate Nanoparticles
