Drop Plate Method

The Drop Plate Method is a microbiological technique for estimating viable microorganisms by placing small liquid samples onto the surface of solid agar. A sample is typically serially diluted, and measured drops from each dilution are deposited on designated areas of an agar plate; after incubation, visible colonies are counted and used to calculate colony-forming units in the original sample. In environmental research, this method helps quantify bacteria or fungi in water, soil, and other samples while reducing media and sample volumes compared with full-spread plating. It supports monitoring of microbial abundance, contamination, and changes in environmental conditions.
