Ethanol Production

Ethanol production is the conversion of biological feedstocks into ethanol, an alcohol used as a fuel, solvent, and industrial raw material, making it important in environmental science and renewable energy research. In a common process, microorganisms such as yeast ferment sugars under oxygen-limited conditions, producing ethanol and carbon dioxide; distillation then concentrates the ethanol for use. Researchers evaluate feedstocks, energy consumption, greenhouse-gas emissions, water use, and waste generation to assess environmental performance. Advances in cellulosic biomass conversion, process efficiency, and waste valorization may support lower-impact biofuel systems and more sustainable resource use.

Microdialysis of Ethanol During Operant Ethanol Self-administration and Ethanol Determination by Gas Chromatography

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...

Source: Bucher, T., et al. Methodologies for Studying B. subtilis Biofilms as a Model for Characterizing Small Molecule Biofilm Inhibitors. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates how biofilm matrix integrity influences bacterial resistance to ethanol by comparing colony-forming units in untreated and inhibitor-disrupted biofilms. Reduced CFUs in inhibitor-treated samples demonstrate that the extracellular matrix is essential for protecting biofilm-embedded cells from antimicrobial stress.

An Assay for Measuring the Effects of Ethanol on the Locomotion Speed of Caenorhabditis elegans

C. elegans is a useful model for studying the effects of ethanol on behavior. We present a behavioral assay that quantifies the effects of ethanol on the locomotion speed of crawling worms; both initial sensitivity and the development of acute functional tolerance to ethanol can be measured with this assay.
