Flavonoid Characterization

Flavonoid characterization is the analytical identification and structural assessment of flavonoids, a diverse class of plant-derived polyphenolic compounds relevant to medicinal research. It combines techniques such as ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance to separate compounds, measure their molecular masses, and determine structural features including hydroxylation, glycosylation, and substitution patterns. These analyses help distinguish closely related flavonoids and establish their chemical profiles in plants, foods, extracts, and biological samples. In medicine, reliable characterization supports investigations of flavonoid bioactivity, pharmacological mechanisms, quality control, metabolism, and the development of compounds with potential therapeutic value.

Here, we present the aluminum chloride colorimetric method, a direct analytical technique to determine flavonoids in calendula quantitatively. This approach utilizes a straightforward chemical reaction involving treating the calendula extract with an aluminum chloride reagent, forming a colored complex. The color intensity, assessed using spectrophotometry, correlates with the flavonoid concentration.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...
