Left Ventricular Function

Left ventricular function refers to the ability of the heart’s left ventricle to fill with oxygenated blood from the left atrium and pump it through the aorta to the systemic circulation, making it central to tissue perfusion. During diastole, the ventricle relaxes and fills; during systole, coordinated myocardial contraction raises intraventricular pressure, closes the mitral valve, and opens the aortic valve. Clinicians assess left ventricular function using echocardiography, ejection fraction, ventricular volumes, wall motion, and pressure measurements. These measures help identify systolic or diastolic dysfunction, guide diagnosis and treatment of heart failure, ischemic disease, and cardiomyopathies, and monitor response to therapy.

Measuring left ventricular pressure (LV) in embryonic and neonatal mice is described. Pressure is measured by inserting a needle connected to a fluid-filled transducer into the LV under ultrasound guidance. Care must be taken to maintain normal cardiac function during the experimental protocol.

Transthoracic Speckle Tracking Echocardiography for the Quantitative Assessment of Left Ventricular Myocardial Deformation

Speckle tracking echocardiography is an emerging diagnostic imaging technique for the quantitative assessment of global and regional myocardial performance. Standard view echocardiographic motion images are recorded and deformation parameters are subsequently measured by automated continuous frame-by-frame tracking and motion analysis of speckles within the B-mode images of the myocardium.
