Lesion Segmentation

Lesion segmentation is the process of identifying and outlining abnormal tissue in medical images, converting a lesion’s visual extent into measurable anatomical information. The method separates lesion pixels or voxels from surrounding healthy tissue using image intensity, texture, shape, anatomical context, or machine-learning models, with results refined through preprocessing, classification, and boundary assessment. In medicine, segmentation supports diagnosis, disease staging, treatment planning, and monitoring by enabling measurements such as lesion volume, location, and change over time. It is used across modalities including magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasound, and pathology imaging, helping researchers and clinicians quantify disease more consistently and evaluate imaging biomarkers.

We developed a method to successfully remove, process, section, and stain, for histopathological evaluation, mammary tissue that had originally been fixed on slides as whole mounts. This method may promote the collection and evaluation of mammary gland whole mounts in reproductive and developmental test guideline studies.
